Lobato Launched
Six years after it was filed in 2005, the lawsuit known as Lobato v. State of Colorado is going to trial today. Launching the landmark trial, organizations and individuals who support public education gathered at the State Capitol on Sunday to demonstrate the need for, and scope of, the Lobato suit.

Lead counsel Kathy Gebhardt of Children’s Voices set the context, noting that our school funding crisis is a “man-made” problem that can be fixed and that we can do better for our students.
Boulder parent Teresa Wrangham spoke of her experience as the parent of a child with special needs, and narrated the creation of a human graph depicting how far Colorado has fallen behind the national average in per pupil funding.
Superintendent of Center Schools (San Luis Valley), George Welsh describes the inequity and inadequacy of school funding in relationship to his district.
Jefferson School District Superintendent Cindy Stevenson describes the “destructive, grim choices” her district has to make while implementing important education reform in a time of deep budget cuts. “Jeffco has stepped up to what the state has asked to do; now we are asking the state to step up to the constitutional provisions around school funding,” Stevenson summarizes.
